Indore: Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport will soon have an Aviation Weather Observing System (AWOS) or Meteorological Park for smooth flight operations especially during bad weather conditions.
The Met park will be equipped with a Runway Visibility Range (RVR) equipment which will help flights land even in zero visibility.
Airport director Aryama Sanyal said that RVR, which is also called ‘Drishti’ system, includes a set of visibility sensors and communication device, and it is capable of detecting accurate visibility range to help pilot in safe landing and take-off.
She said that the instrument will be installed parallel to the runway and it will send information regarding visibility conditions to the control tower through which the pilot will be informed.
Officials said that runway visual range is required to allow aircraft land in low visibility. “This new equipment will allow us digital calculation of runway visibility range, which as of now is calculated manually,” they said.
At present, aircrafts land at city airport with help of instrument landing system (ILS). The ILS is helpful in taking the aircraft to final approach point. But after that, pilots have to visualize and see central line of the runway only then he can land.
