New Delhi: RSS affiliate Swadeshi Jagran Manch says the Modi government should not fall into the “trap” by selling Air India and should instead explore options to revive the national carrier, including selling some of its ‘Maharaja’ assets.
This comes days after RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said Air India should not be sold to a foreign buyer.
The government has announced that it plans to disinvest its 76% stake in the national carrier, which has been making losses for the last few years. “The government should follow the equity route and not the strategic sale route it is exploring now,” Swadeshi Jagran Manch co-convenor Ashwani Mahajan told ET. “It should not fall into this trap (of selling off the airline) and focus instead on cleaning up its balance sheet.”
Mahajan emphasised that the national carrier has valuable assets across the country and some of these could be sold off to beat the losses. “It is called a Maharaja airline and its assets are also that of a Maharaja. Selling assets is a good idea. As it is, the airline is not getting any buyers and there is limited competition (to buy it),” Mahajan said.
SJM, which has always preached indigenous production and make in India, also feels the government should do a thorough assessment, it claims this has not been done, of what went wrong with Air India and then plug the loopholes.
