Indian carriers saw highest passenger occupancy in February: IATA

New Delhi: Airlines of India — the world’s fastest growing air travel market — saw their planes fuller than carriers anywhere else. According to International Air Transport Association (IATA), domestic flights in India reported reported load factors of over 90% for the first time ever this February which incidentally was the country’s 42nd consecutive month of double-digit year-on-year demand growth.
“India’s domestic traffic rose 22.9% (in February 2018 over same month in previous year) and load factor exceeded 90% for the first time on record. Passenger demand continues to be stimulated by network growth that translates into time savings for air travellers,” IATA said, adding, “Business confidence in the country recently fell below the key 50-mark for the first time since the tax reforms in mid-2017. However, many analysts expect this dip to be temporary and, more importantly, India remains the fastest growing major economy in the world.”
Airlines of China, which saw the second highest growth in domestic air travel in February 2018 over same month in previous year, saw the second highest occupancy.
India’s domestic air travel market accounts for 1.4% of the global domestic air travel market with China’s share at 9.1% and US at the top with 14.5%. India shares the third spot with Russia also having 1.4% share in global domestic air travel market.
