Soon, fly further, faster

New destinations will also become just one plane ride once the city airport starts functioning 24x7. At present, Patna has direct air connectivity with four metros - Delhi, Calcutta, Mumbai and Chennai - along with Lucknow, Ranchi, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Bhopal. The flight to Bhopal, however, has been temporarily suspended and will resume from February 1.

IndiGo is likely to commence a daily direct flight to the capital of Assam from March 25, while GoAir proposes to connect Ahmedabad with Patna from May 1. Direct flights are also proposed to cities su-ch as Chandigarh and Indore.

Indigo, which has 10 scheduled departures daily in the ongoing winter schedule, has proposed to more than double its flights to 21.
GoAir, which has six departures, has proposed to increase its daily flights to 12. Jet Airways, which has three departures, has proposed to hike its flights to five daily departures on weekdays and seven on Sundays.

Air India, which has three departures, wants to double its flights while Spicejet, which has four daily departures, has proposed to introduce one more flight in summer.

Airport sources said the Airports Authority of India (AAI), after suggesting some modifications in timings, has given its nod to the increase in flights from Patna. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation will now communicate with the airlines concerned before they formally notify it.

The number of flights operational from Patna airport was just 10 in 2010. The airport registered 32.4 per cent growth in passenger flow in 2015-16.

"To keep pace with the increase in number of flights, some stopgap arrangements are being made at the airport premises creating additional space on the first floor of the Security Hold Area," said Patna airport director R.S. Lahouria. "The fifth boarding gate will then become operational from there. Pre-fabricated porta cabins would too be installed in front of the terminal building to expand the check-in area. Both these are likely to be ready by the end of February. This will cost around Rs 80 lakh."
