Thiruvananthapuram: A common user domestic cargo terminal (CUDCT) has started functioning at the Trivandrum International Airport.
Airlines operating from domestic terminal of the airport, namely Air India, Indigo, Jet Airways and Spice Jet will handle cargo operations through the CUDCT.
CEO of AAI Cargo Logistics and Allied Services Company (AAICLAS) Keku Bomi Gazder inaugurated the facility at the old domestic building of the airport, in a function held here on Thursday.
An X-ray machine for the CUDCT was brought from Mumbai. The facility was set up at a cost of Rs 50 lakh.
"We hope to have nearly 500 tonnes of cargo movement in the first month and increase of 15% to 20% in the coming months," said Keku Bomi Gazder.
According to airport director George G Tharakan, considering the present flight movement at the airport, there should be a minimum of 200-tonne cargo transportation daily.
"Daily we have 50 flight movements at the airport. And assigning four tonnes for each flight, 200-tonne cargo movement is possible from the airport on a daily basis. But the present cargo movement is not more than 50 tonnes per day. We hope to improve the cargo movement through the CUDCT," said Tharakan.
