Airlines may soon share security staff

The Civil Aviation Ministry has proposed allowing airlines to share trained staff for various security-related roles at airports.

Now, airlines can only deploy their own whole-time employees for such duties. They would have gone through proper training, due selection procedure and certification in accordance with the national civil aviation security programme. This will change soon if the airlines get the nod to enter into contract with other domestic airlines “for security services” at airports, according to the proposed amendments in the Aircraft (Security) Rules, 2011.

“All airlines have to deploy their own staff even at small airports where the flight frequency is very less. This is a huge cost burden on us. A common security pool will help us reduce costs by utilising trained staff from other airlines,” said a senior airline executive, on condition of anonymity.
