With winter season approaching, the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) here is ready to ensure uninterrupted operations even during adverse weather conditions.
Currently the airport uses Category – I (CAT-I) instrument landing system (ILS), which can enable the aircraft to land even if pilots are unable to establish visual with the runway.
ILS uses a combination of radio signals and high-intensity lightings for safe landing of aircraft during fog, rain and snow. According to officials BPIA’s CAT-I system can ensure safe landing even when visibility is down to just 750 metres.
