Airlines fly high as domestic air traffic spikes by 23% in October

The domestic air traffic market grew by 23% in October, continuing its over two-year run of double-digit growth on the back of cheap fares and rising connectivity. October witnessed 23.2% rise in the number of fliers at 86.72 lakh, against 70.39 lakh during the same month, last year. This is the 27th consecutive month that domestic traffic has registered double-digit growth.

SpiceJet continued to fill most of its seats while IndiGo garnered 42.6% of the market, the highest for the airline this year. IndiGo, the market leader for years, has crossed the 40% mark for the second consecutive month.

Nearly 8.67 million passengers flew in October, compared with 7.03 million a year ago, Directorate General of Civil Aviation said.

SpiceJet increased its market share from 12.5% in September to 12.9%, Vistara from 2.5% to 2.7% and AirAsia from 2.3% to 2.7%.
