Ahmedabad: Parking woes for aircraft landing at Sardar Vallabhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA) will soon come to an end as the airport authorities have decided to relocate the Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower. This will not only add more parking space for in-bound flights but also help ease air traffic congestion. As of now, parking space for aircraft on the tarmacs at the SVPIA is saturated. The ATC tower monitors the movement of all airplanes, vehicles run by the airport authorities and different airlines. It also monitors ground staff who are stationed on the runways and tarmacs.
The ATC communicates with all aircraft which are either landing or taking off and maintains communication till the flight crosses the 10 nautical miles radius. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) is framing the tender for the relocation of the ATC tower at Ahmedabad Airport, which will be issued to aprivate operator. Ahmedabad Airport Director AK Sharma confirmed the development and said, “We are in process of picking a new location for the ATC. The new ATC will be upgraded and will boast new features and sophisticated technology.
After relocating the tower, we are planning to construct a new terminal building. This will add more aircraft parking space to the airport.” Sources with AAI also confirmed that senior officials from the regional headquarters in Mumbai also visited site and held meetings to relocate the ATC. SVPI airport has parking space for 30 aircraft, out of which eight tar-macs are adjacent to the terminal and 22 are on the other side of the tarmac. The airport also has eight longterm parking slots for private aircraft. Domestic and international terminals have four tarmacs each.
