More than 10% of international tourists who visited India in September 2016 travelled through airports in Tamil Nadu, data released by the Union tourism ministry show.
Chennai airport ranked third among the international airports in the country after Delhi and Mumbai airports, recording 8.30% foreign tourist arrivals (FTA) last month. Nearly 2% of foreigners had travelled via Trichy airport.
According to an official statement, there was 13.4% growth in FTAs in September this year over the same period in 2015. Bangladesh accounts for the highest share of tourist arrivals followed by the US and the UK last month, earning foreign exchange to the tune of Rs 11. 781 crore through tourism.
The Union ministry of tourism compiles monthly estimates of FTAs on the basis of nationality-wise and port-wise data received from Bureau of Immigration (BOI) and Foreign Exchange Earnings (FEEs) from tourism on the basis of data available from the Reserve Bank of India.
