Kolhapur: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials and elected representatives from Kolhapur have decided to seek licence for scheduled air services for city airport in next one month. This would enable the AAI to deploy night landing facility at the existing airstrip of the airport and scheduled flights can be started by next year.
The meeting held in Mumbai on Thursday was attended by officials from directorate general of civil aviation, AAI, Kolhapur district guardian minister Chandrakant Patil, district guardian secretary Rajagopal Devara, district collector Amit Saini, MPs Raju Shetti and Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati. MP Dhananjay Mahadik could not attend the meeting.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is responsible for implementing, controlling and supervising airworthiness standards, safety operations, crew training in the country.
The Kolhapur airport expansion has been stuck due to strong opposition and varied demands from Gadmudshingi village, which had opposed acquisition of 10.93 hectares of forest land. But the village passed a resolution that they did not have any objection over the land acquisition and submitted it in written format during the meeting. Local MLA Amal Mahadik submitted the letter in the meeting.
"The decision of the villagers is very good and they will also benefit from the airport for sure. The state government already has Rs 1.80 crore sanctioned for land acquisition. We will now verify the facts and finalise the amount. The state would arrange it through varied sources. Now, we are going to focus on obtaining licence for running scheduled flights from Kolhapur to Mumbai. Once it is done, AAI can work on night landing facility," Saini said.
