Chennai: Glasses have been breaking at the newly-built terminal in Chennai Airport and when it broke for the 65th time, the airport director Deepak Shastri could not take it anymore! “We are planning to use less number of glasses in the airport terminal in near future. In our modernisation programme, I will ensure glass is used minimally,” said Shastri who has plans to make Chennai Airport one of the best in the world.
Shastri has been furious over one-sided reports over the repeated falling of glass ceiling at the new terminal. “Yes, the glass broke for 65th time but it was due to an error on passenger’s part,” says Shastri. “We saw the CCTV image and found the glass door near the aero-bridge from ramp was damaged due to a roller bag being carried by a passenger,” he said. “We’re planning to replace the glass with something sturdy so that it could not be damaged so easily.”
The falling of glasses regularly in the city airport has even made the National Human Rights Commission intervene and pull up Airport Authority of India and Civil Aviation Ministry. This has made Union Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju order an inspection to be carried at the Chennai Airport.
