New Delhi: The Terminal 2 of Indira Gandhi International Airport here, the erstwhile international terminal that has been lying almost defunct since 2010 when Terminal 3 was commissioned, will again buzz with activity from the end of this year.
The private airport operator Delhi International Airport Ltd. (DIAL) plans to expand the domestic departure terminal 1D and some low cost carriers operating from the terminal would be shifted to Terminal 2 to help carry out the construction work.
According to airport officials, Terminal 1D might continue to cater to IndiGo flights while SpiceJet and GoAir might be shifted to Terminal 2.
At present, Terminal 1D is bursting at the seams thanks to the ever growing number of flights of low cost carriers. Passengers complain that during peak hours, there is not even space to sit at the congested terminal.
Till the time DIAL completes the much needed expansion of Terminal 1D a large number of passengers of budget carriers would have to catch their flights from Terminal 2, which is near Terminal 3 but at a considerable distance from Terminal 1D. An airport official said that adequate number of signages will be put on the approach roads to guide passengers to the correct terminal.
Since the commissioning of Terminal 3, the old Terminal 2 has been locked up, apart from being used for Haj flights for a short duration during the year.
“We do not have the practice of ‘Terminals exclusive for any Airline.’ DIAL has plans to expand Terminal -1 to a much bigger facility. So it is possible that during the construction period, some traffic may be shifted to Terminal-2 as a stop gap arrangement, so as to minimize inconvenience to our passengers,” said a DIAL spokesperson.
