Jet's revised fares create aviation turbulence

The Jet Airways' decision to restructure its fare from August 17 -- targeting the low-cost carrier flyers -- has blurred the line between low-cost and full-service fares, besides forcing airlines to scramble to fill up empty seats.

Coming close on the heels of the Air India rolling out a new ticket price structure matching the Rajdhani Express fares, Jet will launch Fare Choices, a structure where fliers can opt out of some services while booking tickets for a lower price.

The industry insiders say that this could bring down the ticket prices to as low as Rs 1,500 on some sectors, but this remains a speculation at this state. "All fares will continue to come with free meals and baggage allowances. With the new fare structure, Jet Airways is targeting passengers who choose to fly low-cost airlines and who account for about 70% of domestic traffic," a Jet Airways source said.

An airline spokesperson informed that a total of eight Fare Choices will be introduced across economy and premiere classes, allowing guests to tailor their bookings to their individual needs. Those flying economy class, for instance, will have the option of choosing from the Deal, Saver, Classic or Flex fare categories. Likewise, Premiere includes Saver, Classic and Flex, while in First Class there will only be one fare, Family First.
