Coimbatore: The Coimbatore International Airport has decided to put the city-side development project proposed by the Airport Authority of India (AAI) on the back burner, as the airport lacks space for the same. Coimbatore airport authorities have communicated to the AAI that they do not have space to spare for the initiative.
The Coimbatore airport was one of the 11 airports selected for the city-side development project. Work on the project was to start in 2018. Airport authorities said the project could be taken up only after plans to build a new terminal takes shape after land acquisition on L&T Road.
"City-side development is basically a system wherein the AAI builds a structure in front of the airport terminal, facing the city," said Coimbatore airport director G Prakash Reddy. "The structure will house passenger-friendly facilities such as hotel, mall, restaurant complex or service apartments. The main objective of the project is to generate more revenue for AAI," he further said.
