AAI gears up to upgrade Chennai airport

New Delhi: There may be some good news for flyers sick of Chennai's trouble-prone airport. The aviation ministry is drawing up a major upgradation plan for the airport that envisages construction of a new terminal between the existing terminals to give flyers a seamless travel experience. The project is expected to cost about 2,000-2,500 crore. Airports Authority of India (AAI) is planning to finalise a consultant for the project by July.
"The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has prepared a four-year plan to upgrade some airports for 15,000 crore. As part of that, the Chennai airport will have an integrated terminal and the project will cost up to 2,500crore. We will enhance the flyer experience," aviation secretary R N Choubey, a 1981 batch IAS officer of Tamil Nadu cadre, told TOI.
The Chennai airport has got an unused terminal between its new domestic terminal and existing international terminal. "The plan we are working on envisages removing the unused terminal, making a new one there that seamlessly links the domestic and international terminals. The final contours are being worked out," a senior AAI official said.
