Chandigarh: Indigo has expressed its desire to start international flights between Chandigarh and Dubai this summer season within 45 days of getting the customs clearance from Delhi and Punjab for which it has already applied. The information was submitted to the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday by Assistant Solicitor General of India Chetan Mittal on the basis of a meeting held in Delhi on April 4. The meeting was attended by the representatives of the Civil Aviation Ministry, Airports Authority of India, Air India, Jet Airways, Spice Jet and IndiGo.
The division bench comprising Justices S S Saron and Gurmit Ram ordered the Central government to ensure customs and immigration facility gets operational at the Chandigarh airport by April 25. The directions came after the court was also informed that as per the Ministry of Home Affairs, installation of required infrastructure and placement of trained immigration staff at the Chandigarh airport might take at least two months. During the April 4 meeting, IndiGo reaffirmed its commitment to starting Chandigarh-Dubai flight in summer schedule 2016 (March 27 to October 29). The Indigo representative said that they were planning to start operation on Mumbai-Dubai-Chandigarh-Delhi and Delhi-Chandigarh-Dubai-Mumbai sectors. But since IndiGo has failed to obtain slots at Mumbai airport, it might replace Mumbai with Hyderabad to make the operations on the route viable. The Civil Aviation Ministry has also decided to allow IndiGo to operate ground handling facility itself with a view to expediting international operations.
