Mumbai's air cargo import booming

Mumbai: Air cargo imports into Mumbai airport, rose 32 per cent to 13,336 tonnes in November 2006, compared with the same period the year before. Exports from Mumbai dropped 1.9 per cent in the same month, over last year, to 12,405 tonnes.
The sharp increase in imports is attributed to a more liberal trade agreement between China and India. Imports to Mumbai are primarily machines, tools, garments and raw materials.
Air India was the top carrier in exports out of Mumbai, with a market share of 18 per cent. Mumbai has a strong export market in pharmaceuticals, organic chemicals, electrical machinery, and apparel. Air express is also growing exponentially. Federal Express and UPS turned in a 43 per cent and 25 per cent increase in cargo exported in November 2006, compared with November 2005.
